Maybe he was ready to play, maybe it was rushed – whatever it was, the Oklahoma Sooners’ offense and quarterback John Mateer did not look good on Saturday against the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry.

He said after the game, his hand was good, and that he had enough practice, despite not being a full go during the week, but that it was just him not being good enough mentally. This week, it’s a bit different at practice.

Oklahoma vs. Texas updated stats

  • Texas leads all-time series 65-51
  • There have been five ties between these two teams
  • Oklahoma has the largest margin of victory, winning by 52 points in 2003
  • Texas has the longest all-time win streak at eight wins in a row over OU from 1940-1947
  • Oklahoma has dominated the series since 2000: 17-10

Sooners QB John Mateer will have a different practice schedule than last week

“I’m a full go, I’m good, I played in the game, so if anything starts hurting, then I’ll chill out. Practice is super important, so I don’t think that was the reason anything happened. It’s super important for any player from pro to youth. It will be good to get into a rhythm. But I’m good to go,” Mateer told reporters on Monday night.

No matter what anyone says, not practicing fully during the week can affect you for the game that week. Mateer was doing his rehab, among everything else he was supposed to do, so there’s a chance he didn’t get as much mental prep work for the game as he should have. Then, there’s also the idea that maybe he did, and he just didn’t play well. That happens to even the greatest quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.

Mateer is a leader, and his owning up to how bad he played, not making any excuses other than he just wasn’t good enough, is what you love to see in your quarterback. However, he has to get it right in practice this week, because something like that can’t happen again. The Sooners are still eligible for the College Football Playoffs based on the way this season is going. However, the rest of their schedule is brutal, so they will need their quarterback.

Seeing how he responds against South Carolina will be very crucial.
