Sooners’ big-time rival with a new change just asked for something he may end up regretting in a few years
The Oklahoma Sooners would destroy Eric Morris and the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a Bedlam game.
There aren’t many rivalries like the one the Oklahoma Sooners have with the Texas Longhorns. Where else can you have a game played at the same time every year, at a state fair, where the fans are split down the middle at the stadium between crimson and burnt orange? Well, there’s one other rivalry that’s close – Bedlam, between the Sooners and Oklahoma State.
This is now considered a former Rivalry in football. The two still hate one another, sure, but they do not play anymore. In basketball, they still play, and are actually scheduled to play one another this Saturday. However, when the Sooners moved to the SEC, that game was taken off their schedule until it was scheduled as a non-conference game every year.
The Cowboys were one of the worst Power Four schools in the country last season. That caused them to fire longtime head coach Mike Gundy. Now, the Pokes have hired Eric Morris, the former North Texas head coach. He’s new to Stillwater and the history there, but he’s not opposed to the rivalry.
“I’d love to get on the phone with anybody that we know that can help us bring that game back,” Morris said earlier this week. “If they’re asking if Coach Morris welcomes that game, I welcome it with open arms.”
Bedlam rivalry between Sooners and Cowboys would be great, but OSU would regret it.
This rivalry has always favored the Sooners. Sure, Oklahoma State won the last matchup, but all-time, the Sooners own the record, and it’s not particularly close. According to Winspedia, the record all-time favors Oklahoma 90-21, with seven ties. OU has the largest margin of victory, with a 75-point win, and the longest win streak, at 19 years. The Pokes have just a two-year streak.
Now that the Sooners are in the SEC, it’s even more unfair. Oklahoma will have the better roster just about every single season. Oklahoma was terrible in 2024, but it would still have beaten Oklahoma State’s team last year and definitely this year. The talent gap just isn’t even close. It would almost be like playing a G5 school every single year, which, on the other hand, would be good for the Sooners.
Morris would end up regretting that very quickly, especially if the rivalry renewed next year. He’s got a lot of work cut out for him at Oklahoma State, with that program being an absolute disaster. But Morris had to give that answer because if he said anything different, he would look scared.
Oklahoma may welcome it with open arms, too.
