Oklahoma's 2025 class fell flat at the end of the cycle, slipping out of the top ten in 24/7Sports' Composite Rankings. The Sooners' class fell all the way to 17th, one of their worst in years. This comes on the heels of three straight top-ten finishes in Brent Venables' first three years.
After a disappointing 2024 season and a lackluster 2025 recruiting class, is it fair for Oklahoma Sooners fans to worry about the future of the program?
I'm not quite there yet.
There are a few reasons to still be optimistic about the future of the program and the upcoming talent of the Sooners.
For starters, Oklahoma is still recruiting the class of 2026 strong, headlined by talented quarterback Jaden O'Neal. The Sooners still have that to look forward to, as O'Neal hasn't wavered in his commitment to the Sooners despite multiple offensive coordinator changes.
Second, it's important to keep in mind what the Sooners' strategy was at the end of the 2025 recruiting cycle. Oklahoma openly admitted that they dropped a few recruits to open up the scholarships needed to attack the transfer portal. They pulled in 15(!) transfer portal players and likely will still have more coming when the spring portal window opens up.
Several of those transfers have plenty of eligibility left as well, meaning they won't just be one-and-done for Oklahoma.
Finally, this staff is full of elite recruiters across the board. The staff under Brent Venables has proven to be able to identify and develop recruits at an uncanny level. Nobody expected Eli Bowen to have the season he did as a freshman.
Keep all of this in mind when you see Oklahoma's below-par standing in the final 2025 recruiting class rankings. There's context behind that.
