The NFL pipeline from the Oklahoma Sooners is still going strong, and several former Sooners earned Pro Bowl nominations as the best players at their position in the NFL this season.
Six former Sooners earned a Pro Bowl nod this season, the second most nominations of any school:
- WR CeeDee Lamb
- RB Joe Mixon
- OT Lane Johnson
- C Creed Humphrey
- OLB Nik Bonitto
- KR Marvin Mims Jr.
Surprisingly, former Sooner legend Baker Mayfield was snubbed from a nomination, earning plenty of pushback online.
However, for those who did, they were well-deserved nominees after terrific seasons.
Ceedee Lamb, WR, Dallas Cowboys
Stats: 101 receptions, 1,194 yards, six touchdowns
Despite missing starting quarterback Dak Prescott for most of the season, CeeDee Lamb kept plugging along. He battled some injuries along the way, but he still finished sixth in receptions and third in yards in the league this year.
While this was far from Lamb's best year statistically, he was just one of 17 receivers with over 1,000 receiving yards and one of just seven players with 100+ receptions on the season.
Lamb's four Pro Bowls are the second-most by a Cowboys wide receiver all-time, trailing only Michael Irvin (five Pro Bowls).
Joe Mixon, RB, Houston Texans
Stats: 240 rushes, 993 yards, 11 rushing touchdowns, 35 receptions, 304 receiving yards, one receiving touchdown
Mixon hasn't broken the 1,000-yard mark yet with one game left, but he is seven yards away from his fifth 1,000-yard season of his career. He's been a quietly efficient part of the Texans' offense.
Despite missing time due to an injury, he finished 15th in the NFL in rushing yards and 11th in rushing touchdowns.
Lane Johnson, OT, Philadelphia Eagles
Stats: Zero sacks allowed, 10 pressures allowed
Lane Johnson was the best offensive lineman in the NFL this season, period. He's a surefire Hall of Famer down the line when he does hang it up, but he has been a sheer dominant force all year long.
Creed Humphrey, C, Kansas City Chiefs
Stats: Zero sacks allowed, seven pressures allowed
Lane Johnson was the best offensive lineman in the NFL this year, but Creed Humphrey wasn't far behind him.
He's the best center in the NFL and has been for the last few seasons. Humphrey is an underrated cog in the Kansas City Chiefs' 15-1 season, manning the pivot spot to a level without equal this year.
Nik Bonitto, OLB, Denver Broncos
Stats: 45 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, four pass breakups, one interception, one pick-six, two forced fumbles, one fumble touchdown
Nik Bonitto is one of those former Oklahoma Sooners that I'll always wonder how much better he could have been with better coaching. Now that's not to say he was poorly coached at Oklahoma, far from it, but what could his numbers have been if Alex Grinch wasn't the one calling the defense? We're starting to see that in Denver.
Bonitto is tied for fourth in the NFL in sacks this year, developing into a quality pass rusher. However, he's also made some incredible plays this season that have kept the Broncos in the playoff hunt.
Marvin Mims Jr., KR, Denver Broncos
Stats: 7 kick returns, 194 yards; 26 punt returns, 418 yards; 34 receptions, 452 yards, four touchdowns
I am a little surprised at Mims earning a spot as a returner this year, as his numbers aren't among the top of this season, but he was a Second Team All-Pro last year as a returner and has made several key plays as a returner and receiver in his career.
