Sooners’ 2026 schedule has a wrinkle that would have been nice to have in Oklahoma’s first two seasons in the SEC
The Sooners have a pretty decent 2026 schedule.
The Oklahoma Sooners and all SEC teams got their 2026 schedules on Thursday, revealing who plays whom and which weeks they play on the road or at home. The Sooners’ 2026 schedule appears to have some pretty hard parts and stretches, as every SEC schedule does.
But it also has some good stretches, like the non-conference games that will make them better. Also, the Sooners finally got a wrinkle they wish they had had in their first two seasons in the SEC. This year, they get to play one of the SEC’s bottom dwellers.
Sooners get to play the Kentucky Wildcats in 2026
Not every SEC team in the conference is a football school. They have football programs, but that’s not always the money-maker for all of them. For the Sooners, it’s football and softball. For the Georgia Bulldogs, it’s football. For Vanderbilt, it’s baseball. And for Kentucky, it’s basketball, as they are one of the biggest basketball programs ever.
Kentucky is not a football school. Since 2021, they have the fifth-most losses among SEC schools, ahead of only Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Arkansas Razorbacks, and the Florida Gators. In the first two seasons the Sooners were in the SEC, they didn’t get to play any of those bottom-SEC teams.
This year, the Sooners get to play Kentucky, which isn’t an easy win, but it makes the schedule a bit easier. Kentucky last season almost beat the Texas Longhorns. So they’re not an easy win by any means. There are no easy wins in the SEC. But it’s as easy as it gets, especially considering the Wildcats will be in the first year of a rebuild, with a first-year head coach, and not Mark Stoops.
This is an interesting wrinkle that, honestly, the Sooners deserve. The first two seasons were brutal. Meanwhile, Texas was playing a significantly easier schedule in both seasons. And to make things even better, the Sooners also play four teams in 2026 with new head coaches, three of them first-timers. Oklahoma lucked out a bit with this 2026 schedule. Then again, we really don’t know what will happen between now and the start of the 2026 season.
