The Oklahoma Sooners knew what they were getting when they hired longtime NFL scout and former NFL executive Jim Nagy to serve as general manager. They expected results in both recruiting and out of the transfer portal. So far, I’d say Nagy has hit the ground running, delivering a rebuilt 2026 recruiting class and a tremendous transfer portal haul this offseason.

However, the best evidence for Nagy’s acumen as a scout and the job he and the front office has done is in their 2027 recruiting class. The Sooners have the top class in 247Sports’ Rankings, and that tally will only increase as the number of commits increase and the guys they have scouted continue to rise up the rankings. Nagy and company have already done a tremendous job identifying talent early, and have already found players well before the rest of the football world knew who they were.

Proof in the pudding for Jim Nagy and the Sooners’ 2027 class

Under Nagy and the front office, the Sooners quickly identified numerous talents across both the 2026 and 2027 recruiting classes well before the rest of the college football landscape got to them. Perhaps no player serves as a better example of that than running back Keldrid Ben. When the Sooners offered Ben, he was an unranked back out of Montgomery, Texas with very little buzz. After his commitment to the Sooners, Ben has skyrocketed up to the 86th overall recruit in the class and the fifth-ranked running back, with offers from all the major college football heavyweights.

Quarterback target Jamison Roberts is another example. A formerly unranked three-star recruit from Alabama, Oklahoma has gunned hard for Roberts, and the rest of the country is taking notice. He rose into the 18th-ranked quarterback spot and the 250th-ranked player in the entire country, picking up that coveted four-star spot. Roberts has picked up offers from the Georgia Bulldogs, Florida Gators, South Carolina Gamecocks, Auburn Tigers, and Ole Miss Rebels in recent months, but the Sooners were there from the get-go.

However, the most important eval from this staff could end up being their best payoff. The Sooners identified in-state star defensive back Gabriel Osborne very early on in their process, and have sent the house to try and get the uncommitted star to stay home. Osborne wasn’t nearly as meteoric of a rise, but he now is a borderline five-star recruit at 30th overall.

All throughout the class, the work that Jim Nagy and the Sooners’ front office has done so far has served as a testament to their ability to scout talent. Getting to these recruits early in the process is important in solidifying Oklahoma’s place in their recruitment, and Nagy has the Sooners in a great place throughout.

Now, the Sooners just have to close the deal.
