Sooners already have a player planning to enter the transfer portal during the week of their College Football Playoff
Despite gearing up for a College Football Playoff matchup, the Sooners have a player hitting the transfer portal.
The Oklahoma Sooners are preparing for their most important game in quite some time, as they gear up for a College Football Playoff game against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Yet, one of their players has entered the transfer portal this week. Sure, it may seem like it’s not the best timing, but former Sooners defensive back Kendel Dolby was not going to play anyway.
On Wednesday, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Dolby plans to enter the transfer portal. The next transfer portal window opens on Jan. 2 and closes Jan. 26. So, Dolby will hopefully be on a new team by then. He is a great guy and was a great player, but both sides needed to move on.
Sooners and Dolby move on from one another
Dolby was a great cornerback, that is, before he was injured. He has dealt with injuries here and there over the last few years, but the biggest one was a fractured ankle.
In 13 games with three starts for Oklahoma in 2023, Dolby finished with 33 solo tackles, 16 assisted tackles, and 49 total tackles. He also had five tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, and four pass breakups. In 2024, Dolby played in only three games, recording 10 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and one pass breakup.
This year, it’s clear he hasn’t been back to his full self. He can’t stay on the field, whether it be because of being banged up or his poor play. So, in essence, he was benched for the younger guys who have pretty much passed him up. That’s not to say Dolby can’t still be great, though.
Being benched for young guys in this instance isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and doesn’t mean he’s a bad player. The Sooners have two of the best young cornerbacks in the country. In 2025, Dolby saw limited action in only four games, finishing with nine total tackles.
The Sooners and the fan base wish Dolby the best, and wherever he goes, they will be getting a great guy and, hopefully, a player who can turn it all around.
