This new era of college football is wild, and I think we can all see the direction it's heading. With how things are right now, it feels like we are heading towards a potential salary cap and free agency, similar to the NFL. But, who knows what direction this sport and league could be heading in?
Because of how things are now with the transfer portal and such, coaches are thinking of doing things that would have been unheard of 5-10 years ago. Big 10 head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Matt Rhule, who actually coached the Carolina Panthers in the NFL, is thinking of shutting down his sporing game because then teams get an early look at players before the college season starts, and when that spring portal window opens, they could poach his players.
And, Bob Stoops actually doesn't mind him doing that.
"That's sound reasoning by Rhule, in my opinion," Stoops said on The REF. "I get it, but I don't know how much money is truly really made. I guess that would be the only reason to do it [Spring Game]. You know, that would be a conversation with the president, AD, and head coach — how much money are we really forfeiting?
"Or is it really worth it, because what Rhule said, we have a young freshman that has a breakout spring game, and all of a sudden, here comes everyone? If I was still the head coach, I think that's sound reasoning. That’s [poaching] been going on since this [transfer portal and NIL] all started and it isn’t gonna stop."
Stoops is right, but at the same time, how upset would this fan base be if they stopped doing Spring Games? It's certainly something to ponder, and it could be a direction that more schools start to go in.
