Brent Venables keeps it as real as he can after the College Football Playoff loss at home to Alabama
Sooners head coach Brent Venables is always going to keep it real.
The Oklahoma Sooners have had a bit of Sooners Magic all season long. They won more one-score games than any other team in the country, but also played in a ton of those one-score games against teams they probably should have beaten pretty badly.
But it’s hard to win football games in the SEC. It’s even harder to win football games in the College Football Playoff. Their luck and Sooner Magic ran out, as they lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Against Bama, they didn’t have it.
Brent Venables keeps it real after loss to Alabama
“Tonight, when we needed it the most, we just didn’t have what it takes,” head coach Brent Venables told reporters after the game. “We just couldn’t dig ourselves out. We couldn’t complement each other when we needed to the most… This is a group that got us to our fifth playoff and did, in many ways, to many people, the unthinkable.”
This team had the win right in its hands. They had a 17-point lead, just like the one they had against the Georgia Bulldogs several years ago, and blew it.
Oklahoma hasn’t had luck or Sooner Magic when it comes to the College Football Playoff, as they’re the only school that has lost a CFP game when having a 17-point lead, and that’s out of 30 total instances.
Just like the first matchup against Alabama six weeks or so ago, the Sooners beat themselves, when last time they played, Bama beat itself. The turnover leading to an immediate touchdown and the blocked punt that led to a score were instances of OU beating itself.
That Sooner Magic wasn’t working on Friday. However, as we have already said a million times by now, don’t let this loss ruin the way you feel about this season. It was a great year that showed Oklahoma is officially back to being the school they are supposed to be – one that competes for championships.
