The Oklahoma Sooners are in line to show the entire country that they are ready for the SEC. Last year, they clearly weren’t. Their first season in the SEC was, you could say, embarrassing.

Oklahoma would have been one of the worst teams in the country last year had their elite defense not bailed them out time and time again. The Auburn game, the defense bailed them out. And, just about every other win they had you could say the same. If they had even an average offense, this team wins two or three more games.

So, 2025 should be interesting, because the offense did improve on paper drastically. So how are they now? The defense is still elite, and it could be even better. We do know one thing — the defensive line is definitely better. In fact, many are saying that they have the best defensive line in the entire country.

And in that defensive line room, they have an advantage on the edge — a guy who is basically another coach on the field.

Sooners have advantage with Taylor Wein

Taylor Wein is going into his redshirt sophomore season, and the Sooners love what they are seeing.

“I can’t wait for you guys to see him. He’s as invested as anybody on this team… I call him the assistant assistant defensive end’s coach,” defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis said regarding edge rusher Taylor Wein.

Wein has been a guy that we have heard about almost non-stop from this Sooners coaching staff. They love him, not just because of how good he is — he’s pretty dang good. But also because of the strides he has made, the IQ he plays with, and the leader that he is. He is the prototypical Sooners edge rusher and captain, really.

We all know about R Mason Thomas, the superstar of the defensive line, especially at the edge position. Marvin Jones is a guy who will likely be the starter opposite of him. But that third edge spot seems to be Wein’s. What he brings as far as leadership and IQ is something that will be too hard to keep him off the field.

And, believe it or not, not every team has a player like Wein — a second coach on the field. So, that’s a special advantage for the Sooners.
