Sooners defender isn't afraid to say how he feels when it comes to an area of the team that was overlooked last season

Despite all of the things thrown their way in 2024, the Oklahoma Sooners managed to win six games and make a bowl game. If you only watched the offense last year, you'd probably think they were the worst Power 4 school in the country.
But, because of the defense, they were able to win a handful of games. The offense was almost non-existent in most of those games, which is why offensive coordinator Seth Littrell was fired, and why the Sooners flipped quarterbacks between Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins. Yet, the defense prevailed so many times when they honestly shouldn't have.
Sooners defense can be better in 2025
They have taken what they learned last season and have used that to become better in 2025.
"I feel like we've communicated way better this year because we were taught a quiet defense is a dead defense," safety Robert Spears-Jennings said at SEC Media Days. "So this year we're emphasizing communication on defense a lot."
With some of the worst injuries in the country, the defense carried the load. So, retaining 64% of that elite defense, which is one of the best retention numbers in the country, and adding elite players on the defense, should equal another elite season on that side of the ball. In 2025, the Sooners' defense could really take over and absolutely dominate, especially as they have gotten better at some things.
“We can be a top 10 defense in the country, for sure,” Spears-Jennings said.
The Oklahoma Sooners should have a much-improved offense this year, with additions everywhere on the roster and the staff, including new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and transfer star quarterback John Mateer.
So, if the offense is even competent, it could only make the defense better. The offense last season was one of the worst in the entire country, and it consistently put the defense in bad situations. With an offense that limits that, the defense won't have to do as much, which usually equals a better defense, and one that's fresher on the field.
RSJ just isn't afraid to tell it like it is, and how it's going to be.
Already elite Sooners defense set to be reinforced by return of veteran playmaker from injury for 2025 season
Despite an underwhelming 6-7 season in 2024, the Oklahoma Sooners were one of the best defenses in all of college football last season, very quietly finishing among the top five and top ten of most metrics. One of the best defenses in program history already returns plenty of playmakers like R Mason Thomas, Kip Lewis, […]
