Sooners freshman who could play a good amount in 2025 just handled a special moment in fall camp practice better than most seniors would
The Oklahoma Sooners have themselves some healthy competition at fall camp.
Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners hit the transfer portal hard this offseason. But, they didn’t really have a choice, as they lost so many guys to the transfer portal.
The guys they got back, though, kind of make up for what they lost. For example, the wide receiver room they have now is much better than the one they had last year when you look at it from top to bottom. They have experience everywhere in the room, and all of them are very good.
That’s only going to make the young secondary better, too. The Sooners have some very young guys in the secondary who are going to play some big-time roles for the Sooners in 2025. Going against a big, long, fast, and strong receiver room every day in practice is going to make the secondary so much better.
And we are already seeing that. There’s some great healthy competition going on in fall camp, specifically with one freshman cornerback, who had a special play happen to him by one of those transfer wide receivers, but he reacted in the perfect way.
Sooners CB Courtland Guillory and Keontez Lewis have healthy competition
The Sooners got wide receiver Keontez Lewis in the transfer portal from Southern Illinois University, and he’s played some big-time games in college. He also played at Wisconsin in the Big Ten, where he was a very solid player. So, he has some experience, and he’s definitely not just anyone when it comes to the Sooners’ receiver room. He’s going to play a role in the offense.
And, you can see some of the skill set he brings, especially in one-on-ones. Lewis has great hands, and we saw that firsthand in one of the clips we got to see from the media on-site at practice in fall camp. Lewis was going against freshman cornerback Courtland Guillory, who’s been making a ton of noise in fall camp.
Guillory actually played amazing defense on the play. He had Lewis covered up like a blanket. But, sometimes that doesn’t matter, as Lewis just made an insane catch, one that looked impossible.
Here’s the best part about this, though. The competition is healthy, and you can tell it is because even Guillory, who was just scored on for this particular drill, or in other words, he just lost the drill, started celebrating with Lewis. After losing the drill, he stood up and celebrated with the guy who made an amazing play on him.
You love to see that out of the young freshman, because it’s how you know that the Sooners have some real healthy competition going on.
