The Oklahoma Sooners had to adapt to the new era of college football, or they were going to get left behind, almost like Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State did get left behind.

But, that's a different story for a different day — just know, the Sooners are not waiting until this year to pay players like OSU has been. That would be silly.

But the Sooners didn't adapt to the new era as well as many had hoped. It's taken a while for them to adapt, and you could even say that they really aren't fully adapted to it yet, as they often need more money for NIL to play with. So, while they can't print more money, they can improve their scouting.

They can scout players who aren't ranked or graded as high on these recruiting sites, and find players that they believe will be just as good as the five stars that everyone else is getting, based on the film they see, and those players will be cheaper. That's what they are doing with both high school recruiting and transfer portal recruiting.

And at the helm of all of that has been Jim Nagy.

GM Jim Nagy is helping Sooners' recruiting

Nagy interviewed for the New York Jets GM job this offseason before taking this job with the Sooners. He got his NFL start as an intern with the Green Bay Packers in 1996 and held scouting positions with the Washington Commanders from 2001-2002, New England Patriots from 2002-2009, and the Kansas City Chiefs from 2009-2013.

They got a guy who knows football. And, we should start seeing the result of that soon.

The coolest part of the job so far has been the buy-in from Coach Venables & our coaches. We have real relationship-builders and mentors on this staff. Our unique structure & collaboration will produce special results. Can’t wait for the full ’27 cycle working together.

The Sooners have had some really big wins already under Nagy, like the transfer portal acquisition of Jaydn Ott, the Cal running back who was considered the best in the country for 2025. And on the recruiting side of things, there was a two-month period where OU was winning every four-star battle left and right. Obviously, things have slowed down a bit with a few losses to players on defense and offense, but the Sooners have been solid nonetheless.

But this is a program that should be near the top in recruiting, not "solid," and I think most people would agree with that. A top 25 recruiting class every single year is not something that fans will be happy with.

Luckily, Nagy is guaranteeing that results will come.
