The Oklahoma Sooners have been recruiting well, but have also had some losses. In their wins, it has been guys that they have really wanted, and have shown that they want those players more than other top programs. But, in their losses, they have lost to inferior programs.

Their last two big losses came to guys who chose schools like Illinois and Baylor over OU. That's not a great feeling, but you cannot control everything in this new era of recruiting with NIL and other things. The Sooners have had some huge wins and hope to get a few more over the next few months.

One of those big losses they had was to Jacob Eberhart, who was listed as an athlete because of all the positions he could play. He was an athletic freak who was versatile and was predicted to be recruited by the Sooners. But, he chose Illinois due to his father previously playing there.

The Sooners are going after another very similar player, in that he's a versatile athletic freak.

Sooners are emerging as a team to watch for Joel Wyatt

According to On3 and Rivals, the Sooners are one of a few teams emerging as a team to watch for Joel Wyatt, an athlete who could be huge for the Sooners' 2026 class.

Wyatt is a 2026 four-star athlete from Oakland High School in Tennessee, and is ranked No. 2 in Tennessee and No. 4 athlete nationally by 247Sports Composite. At 6'4" and 195 pounds, he shines as a wide receiver and defensive back, posting 49 catches for 907 yards and 10 touchdowns, plus 48 tackles and two sacks in his 2024 junior season at The Webb School.

His basketball and track background, with a 6'8" wingspan and strong high jump and long jump performances, adds to his athletic profile. He's quite literally an athletic freak and could have a future in the SEC on both sides of the ball. Maybe the next Travis Hunter, who was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in this last draft.

Wyatt has over 25 offers from major programs like Tennessee, Vanderbilt, LSU, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Auburn. His recruitment centers on Tennessee and Vanderbilt, with Tennessee leading due to multiple visits and connections with coaches Josh Heupel and Levorn Harbin, and they are the in-state school he is close to. But, don't count out Oklahoma.

Intel: “Tennessee has been buzzing at the top with the in-state blue-chipper for most of his recruitment, but do not sleep on the Commodores in this one. Vanderbilt is recruiting Wyatt harder at this point and has more flexibility with his fit in the defensive scheme.” — Sam Spiegelman, Rivals National Analyst.

Vanderbilt remains a strong contender after an official visit, while Mississippi State, Louisville, and Oklahoma are also in the mix. The Sooners could be the team to come almost out of nowhere as things are currently heating up around them and his recruitment.
