The Sooners would be a perfect fit for Lampron, too.

The Oklahoma Sooners will be searching for a linebacker in the transfer portal after losing a few from their elite 2025 defense. On Friday, Pete Nakos of On3 reported that Bowling Green linebacker Gideon Lampron is lining up a visit with Oklahoma.

A G5 linebacker who’s really good, but not as well-known out there, and is likely a cheap option for OU. That’s what we can assume about Lampron. The Sooners don’t spend too much on certain positions in the portal or in recruiting. The linebacker position is one they’re willing to go cheap on if possible. The fit would be perfect.

Gideon Lampron is a Brent Venables-type of linebacker

Lampron plays hard, and he plays with a chip on his shoulder. Those are the kind of linebackers that any coach likes, especially the Sooners. Look at the former walk-on Owen Heinecke this last year, for example. Lampron would likely be the Kip Lewis replacement if Lewis doesn’t return.

Lampron finished 2025 with 119 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles at Bowling Green in the MAC. The competition obviously is not as good, but Lampron can play at the next level. Now, whether he puts up those same kind of numbers or not is another question. However, he could certainly be a starter or a rotational guy for the Sooners.

With Lewis possibly leaving for the NFL Draft, while Kobie McKinzie is set to enter the transfer portal. Heinecke is seeking another year of NCAA eligibility for next year. The former lacrosse player played only three games a few years ago, and the NCAA is counting that against him. Oklahoma also has Jacob Curry, Beau Jandreau, and Kristan Moore coming in at linebacker from their 2026 class.

OU needs at least one more LB, and Lampron would help get the unit at or near what it was last season, for the 2026 season.
