Oklahoma Sooners lose out on hometown kid to far inferior football program, even after the 2024 season

The Oklahoma Sooners have to recruit offensive linemen well because another year like 2024 can never happen for Brent Venables again. The Oklahoma Sooners have to recruit offensive linemen well because another year like 2024 can never happen for Brent Venables again. The offensive line was so bad that it oftentimes messed everything else up.

In 2025, they have improved everything, so that shouldn't happen. However, we still have no idea what 2026 will be like. So, why not go after the trenches as much as possible? And why not do that in your hometown when there are kids good enough to play on your team?

The Sooners missed out on one.

Sooners miss out on Daniel McMorris

Daniel McMorris is a three-star offensive tackle from Norman, Oklahoma, in the class of 2026, and one of the better players in the state, and some would argue the best player in the city. At 6'5" and 265 pounds, he has the size and reach to be a strong offensive lineman for a Power Four school.

He plays for Norman North High School and is ranked as the 476th overall recruit, 39th offensive tackle, and No. 6 player in Oklahoma by the 247Sports Composite. But, many have watched him and think he is much better than what the rankings would say.

McMorris has already committed to a school, though, despite not having to choose for some time still. But, he was so blown away on his visit to that school, that he had to commit. And that tells me that the Sooners just failed there, because there is no reason that an in-town kid should choose Minnesota over Oklahoma.

He also had offers from Kansas State, Iowa State, Northwestern, Arizona State, and Tulsa after an official visit during the Gophers’ “Summer Splash” event in May 2025. McMorris believes Minnesota can help him develop into an NFL draft pick, which is kind of crazy considering the NFL talent that Bill Bedenbaugh had put out there.

The Sooners had huge needs at the offensive line, and they still do when you think about the future. So, for them not to be aggressive for a kid that's in the same town is just kind of crazy, especially when you factor in how hard they are pursuing WR Mason James, who is McMorris' teammate.
