There is no team hotter in the transfer portal right now than the Oklahoma Sooners. On Monday, general manager Jim Nagy kicked things off with six commits, and on Tuesday, he started the day on fire, too.

Since the portal opened, Oklahoma has added two wide receivers — former Virginia Cavaliers WR Trell Harris and former Texas Longhorns WR Parker Livingston — both considered elite options. Their arrival pushed wide receiver Javonnie Gibson out of the Sooners’ plans.

Later Tuesday evening, Gibson entered the transfer portal. Gibson likely realized Livingston and Harris’ addition would leave him on the outside looking in of the receiver room. If Isaiah Sategna returns, Livingston, Harris, and Sategna could become the three primary starters. Gibson just isn’t better than them, at least not anymore.

Gibson lost a step after the injury

Gibson could be considered one of the big what-ifs to happen this past season. During spring camp, Gibson was one of the best receivers, if not the best, on the team, according to reports from people at practice describing the plays he made every single day. Then, Gibson broke his leg.

Of course, Gibson made a comeback for the 2025 season, but we all saw the same thing—he wasn’t the same player.

He improved as the year progressed, but clearly lost a step and struggled to separate from defenders. With a full offseason to prepare and recover, Gibson might regain form. He’ll find out soon enough.

Either way, it’s not his fault, and he does deserve a shot somewhere else. However, the Sooners are in the business of finding players they can put around quarterback John Mateer to help improve the offense. They have done that with Harris and Livingston, filling key spots with talented receivers for the upcoming season.
