Make no doubt about it, John Mateer is going to be the starting quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. I'm not sure if there were any who thought there would be a chance that Michael Hawkins would get the job, but it's pretty obvious Mateer is the guy. He was the biggest transfer portal win of any team this offseason.

But, that doesn't mean that Hawkins won't play in 2025. And, we know based on some of the things we have already been told, that Hawkins is impressing the people he's supposed to impress. Hawkins is a guy who can be the star player in a year or two as a junior or senior. And, he's loyal, unless anything crazy happens, he'll likely be on the team then, too.

So, while he won't be starting this year, it's still really important for him to impress Arbuckle, his new offensive coordinator. And, he's done that so far.

"I've been out to five bowl practices now and talking about like Michael Hawkins, that kid in just five practices, I've seen him get so much better," Arbuckle said. "And I think it's just from constantly – he's the guy out there and getting all these reps and he is so talented and he's going to be such a dang good player. So he's someone that I'm really, really excited I get to work with and put my hands around and get to mold and everything because he's uber talented."

The Sooners love what they saw from him in that week specifically. With a ton of players opting out, graduating, going to the NFL, transferring, you name it — he stepped in and played hard. And, he made some crazy plays during the game, too.

The Sooners have a good one on their hands, even if he isn't the starter next year. If something were to happen to Mateer, knock on wood, they would be confident with what they have.
