Sooners should target elite weapon who’s the son of an MLB Hall of Famer when the transfer portal opens on Jan. 2
The Sooners will need to go and get a receiver in the transfer portal.
The Oklahoma Sooners will need a receiver when the transfer portal opens on Jan. 2. They’ll have till Jan. 16, when the portal closes, to get one. No, they won’t be in the running for former Auburn Tigers WR Cam Coleman, as his asking price of $2.5 million has practically already ruled that out. However, there are plenty of cheaper options.
Jayvan Boggs, the former Florida State Seminoles WR and the son of MLB Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, is a player Oklahoma should look into. Boggs isn’t just any son of a celebrity or famous athlete that people accuse of nepotism. He really has the tools to be an elite player.
Sooners need to target Jayvan Boggs in the transfer portal
The freshman didn’t have the best numbers last season. However, context is important. Boggs was on a terrible Florida State team that ran the ball well. When it did pass the ball, it was primarily to star receiver Duce Robinson.
Boggs was a freshman who dealt with numerous injuries, whether he played through them or was sidelined. In the Seminoles’ fall camp, Boggs’ name was brought up as much as any player on their team not named Tommy Castellanos.
The 6-1, 210-pound receiver is athletic as they come. He’s super fast, can jump out of the building, and can cut on a dime and make plays when he has the ball. Boggs finished his first year with nine catches for 109 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Boggs won’t be too expensive for the Sooners. We know they will likely try to get Isaiah Sategna back on campus for one more year, and that will cost a pretty penny. However, they need to get other guys around him, along with the young first-year students they have coming in. That means they need guys who aren’t expensive, and Boggs’ market won’t be too robust.
OU will have to place some guys they can afford on their roster who haven’t proven anything, especially at skill positions. To get the most out of quarterback John Mateer, he needs weapons. So, Boggs’ fit feels perfect.
