Sooners starter is taking matchup with the LSU Tigers a bit more personal than everyone else on the team is
Javonnie Gibson and the Sooners are ready for LSU.
When you grow up about 60 miles away from a big-time football school, it’s hard not to want to play for that school. Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Javonnie Gibson is from Opelousas, Louisiana, which is why he always wanted to play for the LSU Tigers. On Saturday, he gets to play against them, so this game is a bit more personal for him.
“I felt like if I didn’t go there, I wanted to play (against) them,” Gibson said. “So that’s what I feel like. I always wanted to go there, but I came over here.”
It hasn’t been quite the season that Gibson may have hoped for when he came over from the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff, where he was a 1,200-yard receiver with nine touchdowns. However, he’s gotten better and better every week as he returned from a broken leg a handful of months ago.
Javonnie Gibson is getting closer to his best as he gears up for LSU
Last week, we saw Gibson have maybe his best game of the year. He only had one catch, but it was a touchdown catch, where the RPO play was thrown to him on a slant, and he sure-handed the ball and landed in the end zone. That’s not a play he and quarterback John Mateer would have made too long ago.
“I feel like we’ve seen a lot of growth,” Gibson said about him and Mateer’s connection. “Just staying after practice today, working on the back shoulders, over the shoulders, stuff like that, it’s all going to come together.”
Sure, he’s not the No. 1 receiver or having a 1,000-yard season. But, he’s not complaining. Gibson was the guy at UAPB, and even before that at the University of Arkansas-Monticello, a Division 2 program. He’s at Oklahoma now, and he’s winning football games — of course, he’s not complaining.
“Winning — that’s the main thing,” Gibson said. “I never had a winning season, so I feel like it’s a great season to me. I love it.”
The Sooners will need Gibson against LSU. We know that they have all the talent in the world, especially on defense. And, their game plan will likely be to stop Isaiah Sategna, which means other guys like Deion Bucks and Javonnie Gibson have to step up and answer the call. Gibson is ready for that.
