The No. 8-ranked team in the country has been on a roll this year. The Oklahoma Sooners Women’s Basketball team has just one loss on the year, as they lost to one of the best teams in the country, UCLA. However, OU has shown it can make it to the tournament and actually win some games.

They did last season, and this team may be even better. It helps when one of the few additions you made to your team is the best freshman in the country. Aaaliyah Chavez is the real deal.

Basketball analyst has Chavez leading the Freshman of the Year race

“Aaliyah Chavez is my current frontrunner to take home NFOY honors. She’s come in and made an impact from the jump. Not only that, she adds a versatile piece to a team whose ceiling is as high as nearly anyone’s. I’d like to see her take care of the ball a little better and work on her shot selection as we enter the new year. Oklahoma has an incredibly talented roster, and if Chavez can continue her upward trajectory in conference play, I think she has the best shot at earning NFOY honors.” – Talia Goodman, On3

Goodman has Chavez, the No. 1 player in the 2025 class, as the No. 1 freshman in the country this season. That may seem obvious, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Sometimes players aren’t in as good a situation as they initially thought they’d be in. Sometimes players get injured or are forced into a role they didn’t expect.

Chavez has been a leader, in a way, for a Sooners team that’s beaten some very good teams. She is also averaging 18.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and two steals per game, shooting 41.9% from the field and 34.9% from three. She’s also shooting 85.3% from the free-throw line.

You don’t usually get the kind of production and leadership from your freshman that the Sooners have gotten from theirs. What OU has gotten from Chavez is more than what they probably ever hoped they’d get in Year 1. At this rate, she’s going to be the best player in the country by the time she’s a senior.
