The Oklahoma Sooners have been a school everyone has mentioned to keep an eye on when it comes to former Auburn Tigers wide receiver Cam Coleman.

Fans want him, and why wouldn’t they – he’s one of the very best in the country. However, as he plans to enter the transfer portal now, it’s very apparent that the Sooners may not even be in the race for Coleman.

Sooners may not be able to afford Cam Coleman in the transfer portal

Oklahoma isn’t known as a team willing to spend a ton of money since the NIL and transfer portal era kicked off. It did this last offseason for John Mateer, and you could argue he wasn’t worth the million it spent on him, or whatever the exact number is. Now, after seeing that somewhat backfire with a bad season by Mateer, does anyone think it wants to spend more money?

It’s also worth mentioning that Oklahoma will have to pay a ton of players who overperformed last season and plan to stay this upcoming season. Wide receiver Isaiah Sategna is one of those guys, and several players on the defense could be suitors for pay raises as well.

All of that to say that OU may not be able to afford Coleman.

Sources told A to Z Sports‘ Travis May that Coleman is expecting to land around $2.5 million this offseason. That’s more than what Mateer is making, and Oklahoma still has to pay a lump sum on Sategna. That’s not something that just seems realistic at this time.

“A to Z Sports reached out to sources in the know surrounding Cam Coleman’s transfer situation, and this move for the stud wide receiver wasn’t just a surprise to the general college football public. The Auburn program apparently didn’t expect this move either. According to verified sources, Coleman’s agent David Mulugheta (of Athletes First) is asking for $2.5 million for the future first-round pick wide receiver’s services (for just one year).”

So, while every Sooners fan wants Coleman, and rightfully so, it doesn’t seem realistic at this point. It’s also worth noting that other suitors willing to pay more may have better quarterback situations in place. Coleman just played with Peyton Thorne for a year, then with Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels last season. He may want to go somewhere that’s much more established at that position, or somewhere that has connections to his initial recruit, like the Florida Gators. Going with OU would be a bit of a gamble for Coleman.

Sooners fans should definitely not get their hopes up. However, there are other guys at the position who could be brought in and still have a legit impact on the offense.
