Last week against the Texas Longhorns, it was hard to look at anything with the Oklahoma Sooners and think positively. This week, the team reminded everyone why they have the best defense in the country. They absolutely destroyed the South Carolina Gamecocks, causing their head coach, Shane Beamer, to let it all out in his postgame presser.

“The game plan all week was to be able to run the ball,” Beamer told reporters after the game. “We wanted to get the ball on the perimeter. We wanted to be able to, not so much RPOs, but kind of. We got some quick game in there, we had some empty [set].

“I know it may not look like it, but we are not trying to bang our heads against a wall and run into a box every play. We tried to do a lot of different things, but give them credit. Venables is a great defensive coach. It’s why I think Texas scored one TD against them. It’s why Michigan didn’t score much on them, and Auburn didn’t score much on them. They’re freaking good.”

It’s clear the defense drove him a bit close to the edge of exploding at the press conference, and rightfully so.

Oklahoma Sooners’ defense shut down Beamer’s offense

Now, let’s preface everything by saying that the South Carolina offense has not been great this season as a whole. That is largely due to its offensive line being one of the worst in the country, and maybe the worst in the SEC. LaNorris Sellers, their quarterback, is one of the best in the country, but he can’t do anything when he doesn’t have any time.

The Sooners capitalized on that. When Sellers doesn’t have time to throw, SC has to try to get the run game going, and that just didn’t work either. OU held the Gamecocks to just 54 total rushing yards, with 36 of that coming off one play that was a busted play by the defense. And that 36-yard run ended by being in the red zone, which resulted in a turnover on downs.

Oklahoma had six sacks and 13 tackles for loss on Saturday, and at the end of the game, racked up a safety. They also finished with two turnovers forced in the game, both interceptions. One of those was in garbage time, and one of them was on a fake punt that was sniffed out by defensive end Taylor Wein.

Sooners’ defensive stats vs. South Carolina

  • 54 rushing yards allowed, one rush was a busted play for 36 yards
  • Six sacks
  • 13 tackles for loss
  • 3/15 on third downs
  • 4/7 on fourth downs
  • 224 total yards allowed
  • Two turnovers forced

This defense is proving that, despite the rough game they played last week, where they gave up two touchdowns, they’re still the best in the country.
