Surprise transfer portal entry could sway decision for key playmaker to return to Oklahoma Sooners
Could Cam Coleman’s decision to transfer impact Isaiah Sategna’s return to the Oklahoma Sooners?
The Oklahoma Sooners are already expected to be heavily involved in the transfer portal, but are waiting to hear back on a couple of key players on their NFL decisions that will influence just how involved they get at a couple positions in the portal.
One of those decisions is wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III, who led the team in receiving yards and touchdowns this season. Sategna is deciding between returning or likely being selected as a Day 3 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. On Monday, however, a potential wrench could have been thrown in Oklahoma’s plan for him to return.
Could Cam Coleman impact Isaiah Sategna’s decision to return?
Sources around the program have told me that Oklahoma is confident in the NIL package that they have put together to bring Sategna back to the team ahead of another run for the College Football Playoff in 2026.
However, Coleman’s reported asking price could impact Sategna’s decision. Sources tell A to Z Sports, Coleman is expecting to land around $2.5 million this offseason.
“A to Z Sports reached out to sources in the know surrounding the Cam Coleman’s transfer situation, and this move for the stud wide receiver wasn’t just a surprise to general college football public. The Auburn program apparently didn’t expect this move either. According to verified sources, Coleman’s agent David Mulugheta (of Athletes First) is asking for $2.5 million dollars for the future first-round pick wide receiver’s services (for just one year).”
Now, Sategna’s price point is entirely different than Cam Coleman’s. I do not expect Sategna to approach anything beyond a six-figure price point. However, if he and his representatives hear this sort of figure being thrown around for Cam Coleman, then it behooves them to turn around and ask the Sooners for perhaps a little more incentive to be thrown into his deal to return to Oklahoma.
This is a fairly standard business practice across all facets. Players and agents use these numbers to try and wriggle some more money out of employers (let’s face it, that’s what universities are in college sports these days).
For the Sooners, this could be a bit of a wrench in the plan. If Sategna ups his asking price, say, by about $100-150k, then head coach Brent Venables and general manager Jim Nagy would have a decision to make. That additional money could be earmarked to go to a different player, perhaps an edge rusher or defensive tackle, but instead has to be saved for Sategna. Is that worth it? That’s their decision to make.
Ultimately, I still expect Sategna to return to Oklahoma for 2026, though no official decision has been made yet. However, keep an eye on how this could impact the Sooners’ roster plans and decision-making in the transfer portal.
