Sooners DE Taylor Wein goes out of his way to make sure everyone knows one area of the team that’s playing nearly flawlessly
Taylor Wein and the Sooners have been great, but special teams is playing insane.
The defense is the money maker for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2025. It’s the side of the ball that usually gets all the praise, creates all the crazy plays, and has the spotlight on it 24/7. But, there is one other aspect of the team that is playing out of their mind right now.
“Special teams is kicking ass right now,” defensive end Taylor Wein told reporters after the 17-6 win over the Missouri Tigers.
They are playing like the best special teams unit in the entire country, and it’s going to keep them in every single game they play from here on out.
Sooners’ special teams and defense continue to play lights out
The defense is the best in the country right now, despite everyone claiming the Ohio State Buckeyes have the best unit on that side of the ball. Oklahoma is playing much more formidable opponents every single week than Ohio State is.
The Sooners may also have the best special teams unit in the country, and Saturday’s win over the Tigers kind of proved that to be true as well. The block field goal kick says it all, as Peyton Bowen blocked it during a very crucial point of the game. That block also helped shift the Sooners’ momentum.
Then there is the field goal unit and the punt unit. The field goal unit is the best in the country because it has the undisputed best kicker in the country, Tate Sandell. As for the punt team, it could be better, but it’s not a unit that’s costing the Sooners anything.
Last week against the Alabama Crimson Tide, special teams, who ended up, too, as Wein himself had a tipped field goal. He’s also got an interception on special teams this year. Yes, you read that right. The special teams unit deserves so much more praise, and Wein is giving it.
