Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian gets snarky with Oklahoma and their quarterback situation following Red River Rivalry
Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian was a little snarky about the Sooners quarterback situation after Red River Rivalry.
For the second year in a row, Oklahoma Sooners fans now have to go a full calendar year hearing from Texas Longhorns fans about the Red River Rivalry game. And, to make things worse, the Sooners have scored a combined nine points in their last three games against Texas in the Brent Venables and Steve Sarkisian eras.
Coming into the game, the biggest storyline was easily quarterback John Mateer and whether he would play 17 days after surgery on his thumb, which is on his throwing hand. And, he played terribly, which I’m sure he’d be the first to tell you. But Sarkisian is glad he ended up playing.
Oklahoma vs. Texas updated stats
- Texas leads all-time series 65-51
- There have been five ties between these two teams
- Oklahoma has the largest margin of victory, winning by 52 points in 2003
- Texas has the longest all-time win streak at eight wins in a row over OU from 1940-1947
- Oklahoma has dominated the series since 2000: 17-10
Sarkisian has some snark after the Red River Rivalry
“First of all, I’m glad the quarterback played and John Mateer is a heck of a player,” Sarkisian said. “But I didn’t want to come up and hear and answer ‘what if he would have played.’ The fact that we created three turnovers. We got five sacks. When you look at our defense, there were a lot of great playmakers today and a lot of guys did some different things.”
That’s certainly coming off a bit snarky, as if he’s saying they would win no matter what, and he knew they would win. That’s kind of crazy to say that, considering Mateer played the worst game of his career with a thumb that he just had surgery on, likely little practice as he rehabbed, and of course, as Venables said, no good on good work before the game.
With all that being said, despite the scoreboard being what it was, the Longhorns didn’t just destroy the Sooners. Oklahoma turned the ball over three times through the air, didn’t take the points at the end of the half for some odd reason, gave up a special teams touchdown that featured three blocks in the back by Texas, and only lost by 17. That game should have easily been 16-9, still in favor of Texas, instead of 23-6.
Michael Hawkins Jr. likely wouldn’t have changed enough for Oklahoma to win the game, because Texas was the better team on Saturday, but, Sark, there’s no reason to be snarky.

The Texas Longhorns subtly but hilariously trolled the Oklahoma Sooners
The rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners is easily one of the best in all of sports. Texas and Oklahoma first played each other 125 years ago, and the two programs have faced off annually since 1929 in the Red River Rivalry. The Longhorns won last year’s meeting 34-3 in Dallas.
