Oklahoma Sooners have a lot to love and ‘a lot to learn’ from what they saw with Michael Hawkins Jr. vs. Kent State
Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners liked some of the things Michael Hawkins Jr. did against Kent State.
Everyone was looking forward to seeing just how much Oklahoma Sooners QB Michael Hawkins Jr. has improved, and Kent State would be a good first game for him in 2025. But there were some really big moments, and some that need to be cleaned up before they play the Texas Longhorns.
“I’m assuming he can’t. [Mateer possibly playing next week]. He [Hawkins Jr.] had some experience playing there [Cotton Bowl in Dallas] last year. His mindset was no different today. I feel great about Mike… Mike did a lot of great things… three touchdowns… a lot to learn from on the ones we had to settle for field goals,” Venables told reporters after the game.
Hawkins could be up to start against Texas after what we saw on Saturday from Texas, and against Kent State.
Hawkins looks good enough; Texas looks bad
Just before the Sooners’ game ended, we all saw the Florida Gators beat the Texas Longhorns, and man, Texas did not look good. Florida has had one of the worst offenses in the country this year, with QB DJ Lagway having a game where he threw five interceptions. However, their defense has been good.
The fact that they won, scoring 29, on a Texas defense that’s supposed to be elite, tells me that there are a ton of flaws, and their offense isn’t very good. Based on that, and the good we saw from Hawkins, I think he should start next week, just to give Mateer that extra time he needs.
But, make no doubt about it – Hawkins has to clean some things up. He made some very nice plays, like the TD heave while being wrapped up. However, he also missed a lot of open wide receivers, and the misses weren’t just barely misses. Those misses were passes that sailed feet away from the receivers, when the pocket was sometimes clean, including an interception that was dropped by Kent State.
With the run game still looking mediocre, having Hawkins’ legs is a must, though. The run game won’t put up 200 yards against Texas, so having Hawkins and his ability to create will help.
