Never lost a party. That phrase has taken on a new meaning for Ole Miss fans celebrating the baseball team’s berth in the College World Series Final in Omaha, NE. Though the SEC has numerous fanbases with reputations of making alcohol disappear, Rebels fans are the latest to flex their muscles livers on a national stage.
After receiving the final at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, Ole Miss has been playing with a new lease on life. The Rebels will square off with Oklahoma in a three-game series beginning on Saturday, playing for the first national title in Ole Miss baseball history.
Ole Miss fans have been doing a hell of a job in celebrating their team’s success. Located near Charles Schwab Field is a bar called Rocco’s. Rocco’s has been putting on the famous CWS Jell-O Shot Challenge for years.
The challenge is simple – with each shot that is purchased, a corresponding tally goes on the board for the consumer’s school. The school that buys the most shots wins. Whether the prize is permanent liver damage or a t-shirt, Ole Miss fans will take their wins wherever they can find them.
Selling the Jell-O shots at $4.50 a piece, Rocco’s has been cashing in. At last count, Rocco’s has made $95,211 off Jell-O shots alone! And with Ole Miss and Oklahoma guaranteed at least two more games in Omaha, that number will continue to climb.
One Ole Miss fan known only by his remarkably fitting Twitter handle (@born2party) bought a whopping 2,000 Jell-O shots before today’s game against Arkansas to put the Rebs ahead of the Hogs.
Ole Miss fans have been through the ringer. Heartbreaking losses and national embarrassment have become a theme for the school’s athletic department. But it is currently a fantastic time to be an Ole Miss fan. The baseball team is playing for a national title and Lane Kiffin is giving SEC programs nightmares after a 10-win season on the gridiron.
Whether Ole Miss fans will be drinking to celebrate a title, or drinking to cope with another disastrous heartbreak is to be determined. For now, we tip our hats and raise our glasses Jell-O shots to you, Ole Miss.
Hotty Toddy.
