The Egg Bowl is one of the premier rivalry games in all of college football. Since 1998 the game has been played on Thanksgiving Day 23 times. That has created an epic holiday tradition for fans of both teams and families all over to fight about Ole Miss and Mississippi State football as they pass the turkey and dressing. However, it seems at least for this year that tradition is going to change.
According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports the 2024 Egg Bowl will be shifting off Thanksgiving and onto Black Friday. The game will reportedly kick off at 3:30pm ET on ABC. Despite the change in timing, this should mean even more eyes on the Ole Miss and Mississippi State rivalry game.
The Egg Bowl has been played 120 times, dating back to the 1901 season. Ole Miss currently leads the series 65-46-6 through last year's matchup that ended in a 17-7 victory for Lane Kiffin and the Rebels. This year's game should be another seemingly favorable matchup for Ole Miss, but Mississippi State has the ultimate opportunity to try and play spoilers as the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams for the first time ever.
Ole Miss is currently the seventh most likely team to make the College Football Playoff according to most sports books, but a late season loss (or even a close game) to a Mississippi State team currently expected to win just four or five games would likely end their season.
As college football's rivalry weekend kicks off Thanksgiving weekend, all eyes will be on the Ole Miss and Mississippi State on Black Friday this year. There will be more teams than ever still officially in the mix for a College Football Playoff spot going into that weekend. That means this year's Egg Bowl could be the most consequential matchup ever be played between the two teams.
