‘That would be a great spot for him’ – Mississippi radio host mentions job that hasn’t opened yet as a possibility for Lane Kiffin

Every college football program with a head coach opening is interested in swiping Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss.

What is Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin going to do this winter?

That’s easily the biggest question in college football right now.

Kiffin is at the top of the list for several programs with head coach openings, including LSU and Florida.

Ole Miss, however, is going to do all they can to keep Kiffin in Oxford.

Mississippi radio host mentions job possibility for Lane Kiffin that no one else is talking about

I don’t think Kiffin even knows what he’s going to do at this point, so it’s all speculation for now.

There are some folks, though, who think the New York Giants, who just fired head coach Brian Daboll, could be a possibility for Kiffin.

Former Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, who has a close relationship with Kiffin, is the quarterback of the future for the Giants.

Sports Talk Mississippi host Brian Hadad agrees that the NFL could be a possibility for Kiffin, and he also mentioned the Giants on Wednesday during an appearance on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning.

Hadad also mentioned another NFL job that could interest Kiffin if it comes open — the Miami Dolphins.

“I’ve really convinced myself that he’s not going to take another college job,” said Hadad. “So I think that if he’s going to leave — and if he doesn’t leave this year it’s going to be really difficult to see him leaving — I think the NFL is where you have to look. The Giants are interesting. Could you reunite him with Jaxson Dart?

“If the Dolphins job comes comes open, my goodness — he’s got the place down in Boca Raton. So, I mean, that would be a great spot for him. I think the NFL is his next move. So that’s where I’m looking more than anything else. I don’t think he’s going to go to LSU. I thought that he might go there. And then the governor of the state opened his mouth, and then everything else happened. And so I’ve stopped thinking that. Florida, maybe. But I just don’t know what Florida is going to give him at this point that Ole Miss can’t give him. So I think the NFL is his next stop — if he decides to make a next stop at all.”

Mike McDaniel is still the head coach of the Dolphins, and the team seems to have a little momentum after upsetting the Buffalo Bills this past weekend (though that win may prove to be fool’s gold). Miami, however, is 3-7 this season after finishing 8-9 a year ago. McDaniel’s job certainly isn’t “safe”, so we’ll see what happens there.

I think I agree with Hadad that the NFL makes a lot of sense for Kiffin. For one, it’s almost certainly a less stressful job due to the lack of recruiting and NIL/transfer headaches. Secondly, the timing of the College Football Playoff (Ole Miss has all but locked up a spot) would make it difficult for a college program to hire Kiffin — especially if the Rebels play deep into January. It wouldn’t be difficult, though, for an NFL team to hire Kiffin in late January.

Kiffin served as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 2007 and for four games in 2008, so he knows what life in the NFL is about.

Again, we’ll see what happens. I still think the most likely outcome is that Kiffin stays at Ole Miss. But the NFL, given the current climate of college football, could definitely be an attractive option for Kiffin (But I would probably guess Kiffin would pick Dart and the Giants over Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins if he decided to make the jump to the NFL).
