NCAA confirms what many expected on the Trinidad Chambliss request for 2026 eligibility with the Ole Miss Rebels
The NCAA denies Trinidad Chambliss’ reconsideration request for eligibility as his court case is underway
The Ole Miss Rebels are likely finally going to get an answer on their quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and his potential return to Oxford very soon. However, it’s apparently not going to be coming in the form of any good faith correspondence with the NCAA.
All of Chambliss’ and the university’s requests, appeals, and more have been declined with the NCAA. As the court case is underway, with a preliminary injunction and return to school on the line, the NCAA went ahead and closed one more door in the face of Chambliss and Ole Miss.
Ole Miss’ reconsideration request for Trinidad Chambliss denied by the NCAA
Ole Miss filed a request for reconsideration of Trinidad Chambliss’ eligibility waiver to play in the 2026 college football season this week, shortly after their initial appeal with the NCAA was denied. This was ultimately unnecessary, and even perhaps foolish, considering that the NCAA and Chambliss’ legal team were headed to a preliminary injunction hearing just a few days later (Feb. 12). Still, Ole Miss wanted to do everything they could.
The NCAA made sure they didn’t delay (for once) on their ruling of this reconsideration request from Ole Miss. The evidence for reconsideration “did not meet the NCAA threshold for reconsideration”, according to them (reported initially by Ross Dellenger).
This denial of yet another request from Chambliss and the university seems like it might be meaningful on the surface, but it is not. The hearing in Mississippi state court to decide whether or not Chambliss will receive a preliminary injunction to return to football activities took place on Feb. 12, and the college football world is now awaiting a ruling.
Judge Robert Whitwell, the judge presiding over the court case currently, said he will do his best to have a decision in by the end of today.
That is the ruling that really matters. Not some reconsideration that the NCAA denied (once again).
The NCAA continues to embarrass itself here. They have failed to give much of any explanation for their denials of eligibility requests, appeals, and now reconsiderations from both the university and Chambliss’ camp. They remarkably failed to provide extensive medical evidence in the court hearing Thursday that would support their case against Chambliss returning to school. It’s been an utter embarrassment for the NCAA throughout. Now, as a verdict nears, it seems as though the NCAA is going to lose once again — which would mean Chambliss can return to school — but we’ll see soon enough.
