Ole Miss won a thriller against the Georgia Bulldogs, 39-34, as new head coach Pete Golding, elite quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, and the rest of the Rebels moved on to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.

This is the most incredible season in program history for Ole Miss. It’s been an unbelievable run, but could it all come tumbling down? Based on OIe Miss athletic director Keith Carter’s wild message after the game, it’s possible.

Ole Miss Rebels could be without key staff for remaining playoff games

Shortly after the celebrations died down, Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported Carter shared a rather disheartening message when asked about whether the six LSU-bound assistants who have been coaching Ole Miss in the postseason would continue with the program for the semifinals and the championship.

His message was quite surprising: “I don’t know. We’re going to celebrate tonight and get ready for Arizona in the morning.”

There was some significant drama and bad blood between Lane Kiffin and the Rebels’ program over the last couple months. Kiffin tried to play the victim, claiming Carter and others would prevent him from coaching the Rebels in the playoff if he left for the LSU Tigers. The coaches Kiffin planned on bringing with him to Baton Rouge were allowed to stay, including Rebels offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr.

Unfortunately, it now seems those staff members may be asked or even forced to leave, not finishing the playoff run with the Rebels. Would Kiffin or the university do such an outrageous thing? Will the staff comply with any demands to leave the program two games before a national championship?

It’s still too early to tell whether the most ridiculous staff abandonment in history will continue (Lane’s departure was already ridiculous), but hopefully common sense prevails. Yes, the Rebels have performed well despite the drastic coaching changes.

They may be just fine, but losing an offensive coordinator and less prep time is not ideal. Still, no one should be asked or forced to leave two games from a championship. No matter what the circumstances elsewhere. Period.
