I don't know if he meant to or not, but Ole Miss quarterback Austin Simmons sent a strong message to an SEC program that the Rebels lost to last season.

Simmons, a former four-star recruit who was also a standout baseball player, joined McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning this week to discuss his first season as the Rebels' starting quarterback.

The redshirt sophomore was asked by show host Cole Cubelic what fans should expect from the Ole Miss offense with him under center.

"I'm just gonna let you see exactly what this offense is really capable of," said Simmons. "I'd say the first week, and then in Week Two, you're gonna see exactly what we're really made of.

The Rebels' opponent in Week Two?

That would be the Kentucky Wildcats, the team that gave Ole Miss its first loss last season.

I like Simmons' confidence — even though winning on the road against Kentucky is never easy (just ask the Georgia Bulldogs, who escaped with a 13-12 win in Lexington last season). The revenge factor will be a real thing as Ole Miss will certainly be motivated to get a win in Lexington after losing to Kentucky in Oxford last season. And there's also the fact that Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin is one of the best play-callers in the sport. I'm sure he'll put Simmons and the Ole Miss offense in a position to have success.

But I'm also not sure that giving Kentucky some bulletin board material is wise. The Wildcats will also be a motivated team this fall as they've basically been written off by the national media. They'll be eager to prove early in the season that they aren't a team that's an automatic W on the SEC schedule.

And speaking of looking past teams, Simmons needs to be careful not to overlook Georgia State, the Rebels' opponent in Week One.

Georgia State, after all, handed Vanderbilt a loss early last season…
