An unforeseen hot topic of conversation around SEC Media Day is former Alabama head coach Nick Saban, and his potential return to the coaching world. His former quarterback, and now ESPN college fotkball analyst Greg McElroy, was the one who started the conversation this week.

That conversation has continued, and has already been asked of several current SEC coaches at the event. That includes Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, who spent time on Coach Saban’s staff with the Crimson Tide from 2014-16. It appears that Kiffin is of the same perspective that we haven’t seen the last of Saban on a sideline.

“He’s not going to need me to hire him,” Kiffin joked to the media this week. “I don’t think he’s done. I think he’ll be back. Whether that’s college or NFL, I think he’ll be back.”

As it currently stands, this possibility of a return is nothing but speculation at this point. Where there’s smoke, however, there is typical fire. We will see what happens next, and whether Coach Saban makes a legitimate statement about his future. The potential is certainly intriguing in the current college football landscape.

During his 17 years in Alabama, Coach Saban managed to put together a 206-29 overall record. That followed previous stops at Toledo, Michigan State, LSU, and the Miami Dolphins, which would add about 91 victories to his college resume.

Coach Saban has won seven national championships, including six at Alabama, and one at LSU. He has managed to coach 45 All-Americans during his coaching career, while being named the SEC Coach of the Year five different times. Saban also carries a 19-12 record in bowl games during his career as well.

Since leaving the sidelines following the 2023 season with Alabama, Saban has found a nice niche as an analyst for the sport. With his impressive background around the game, he brings a unique and thorough perspective to the industry. Whatever he ends up deciding, Saban will most likely excel, just as he always has outside of his brief stop in the NFL.
