Ole Miss Rebels QB coach Joe Judge embarrasses himself with controversial stance amid Trinidad Chambliss court case
Joe Judge’s take on family balance for college football players stole the show at Trinidad Chambliss hearing
Ole Miss Rebels fans are still waiting to hear back on the Trinidad Chambliss ruling from Judge Robert Whitwell in Mississippi state court.
The injunction hearing was Thursday February 12. Chambliss and the NCAA both presented their cases for his extra year of eligibility in 2026. No ruling has come through (as of this writing). The focus of the court case should have all been on whether Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss was going to be able to return to school. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case when it came time for Ole Miss quarterback coach Joe Judge to take the stand.
Joe Judge embarrasses himself with his take on family balance for college players
Joe Judge was called to the stand during the Trinidad Chambliss injunction hearing, and most of his answers to questions directly had to do with the Ole Miss quarterback and his eligibility. However, Judge went off on a bit of a tangent at one point, and it was not a good look.
When talking about the demanding life and what it takes to a college football athlete at the highest levels, here’s what Judge had to say about balancing family life for players with pregnant partners or new mothers and children to attend to off the field:
“We would have to educate — which is always a tough conversation to have. It’s not going to be a popular opinion, but it’s the truth. We would have to educate significant others who may have been pregnant during the season, or who are going to have a baby during the season — if you have this baby during the season, that father has to play good football. It’s a day-by-day production business. He has to be ready to perform and go out there and play. Why I say that is, you need to let him sleep. He needs to be in another room, detached. You have to explain to the mother like, ‘Hey, listen. He ain’t waking up for midnight feedings. After the seeason be full-metal jacket, do whatever you want with him. He can change every diaper. But in season, he’s got to have a different priority.’”
This was just a small clip of a larger answer, but there is no way to spin this statement into anything besides complete embarrassment. Players in the NFL succeed with families every single year. Student athletes in college shouldn’t be asked to essentially completely abandon their families during football season. Apparently, that’s what Joe Judge believes is necessary, but being a father isn’t a burden, it’s a responsibility and priority much greater than anything that could ever take place on a football field for the amusement of fans. Bad look for coach Judge. He was rightfully bashed throughout the afternoon on Thursday all over social media. Even Lane Kiffin chimed in with a “Joe.” and a facepalm emoji on X.
Meanwhile, the NCAA did end up denying the reconsideration request sent to them by Ole Miss for Chambliss’ appeal. This was no surprise, considering the motion for reconsideration was just sent in earlier this week and the NCAA knew the court was going to settle this in just a matter of days. Judge Whitwell did say that he was going to try and have a judgment by the end of day February 12.
