Ole Miss Rebels suffer a terrible trade of talents in the transfer portal amid Pete Golding’s attempts to fix the defense

Rebels lose edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen to the portal and immediately settle for Jordan Renaud from Alabama

The Ole Miss Rebels are trying to minimize damage a day before the transfer portal window closes amid conflicting reports of possible leaks of player pay information throughout the program. Regardless of the exact reasons for the recent somewhat shocking transfer portal entries from linebacker TJ Dottery, edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen, and others, Pete Golding and Ole Miss are certainly going to be worse for it.

The Rebels staff tried to immediately work up a fix — at least at edge rusher — but the player they tried to replace Umanmielen with is nowhere near an equal trade of talent.

Princewill Umanmielen planning to enter the transfer portal, leaving Ole Miss Rebels in a tough spot

A number of Ole Miss players have hit the portal here recently. Including, some who were set to play prominent roles in 2026. None of them hurt worse than the loss of Princewill Umanmielen. The brother of former Ole Miss star, Princely, Umanmielen transferred in and immediately made a massive impact in 2025. He racked up 11 sacks on the year, 50+ pass rush pressures, and was constantly wreaking havoc where he could in the run game as well. Umanmielen was supposed to be the anchor of the Rebels’ defense up front in 2026, and now it looks like that ideal situation is in serious danger.

Umanmielen had recently signed an extension to return to Ole Miss, but then just a week or so later decided to jump into the transfer portal. Early sourcing (and reports from Ben Garrett of On3) suggests Ole Miss may try to hold Umanmielen to his contract, but nothing official has been released in that regard as of this writing. There’s still time to mend this mess with Umanmielen, but if not, the Ole Miss pass rush could be in major trouble.

Ole Miss lands Jordan Renaud from Alabama to help replace Umanmielen

Just a few short hours after the Umanmielen news dropped, Ole Miss landed a commitment from Jordan Renaud of Alabama. It’s great that the Rebels were able to secure an SEC talent so quickly, but Renaud is a much lesser player. He tallied exactly zero sacks last year for Alabama and just eight pressures in his third year of college football. There’s a good chance he can grow into a rotational contributor, but it’s quite unlikely he’s a game-changing talent like Princewill Umanmielen.

Losing Umanmielen and gaining Renaud is a terrible trade of talents. So, what now, if Ole Miss can’t mend things with their elite edge rusher? The team is also hosting D-III phenome edge rusher Liam Danitz — a highly productive edge talent who totaled 15 sacks last season. That could certainly help if he signs with the Rebels. However, no one in the portal is nearly as talented or productive at the highest levels as Umanmielen was for Ole Miss this past season.

This is obviously going to be a situation to watch for Ole Miss fans. Will the Rebels figure out a way to get Umanmielen back out of the portal and return? Will they try to enforce his contract extension? It’s too early to call.
