Oxford (Miss.) put up a 60-burger Friday – demolishing crosstown rival Lafayette to the tune of 63-20. The Chargers played all of its quarterbacks in the rout. Including Knox Kiffin.

The son of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin finally made the transfer from California to Mississippi earlier this summer. And on Friday, he introduced himself to the state of Mississippi and beyond. The 6-foot-2, 170 pound sophomore emphatically scored on a quarterback keeper and quickly showed the family swagger we all know and love.

After racing into the end zone, Kiffin flashed the Shedeur Sanders watch flex celebration at the Lafayette band, followed by the South Memphis Hype Man trademark dance – drawing a penalty flag from the back judge. But, the rout was on and it seems like Kiffin has found a home at Oxford High School.

Knox Kiffin’s first action at Oxford was minimal but he made an impact.

Oxford won the “Crosstown Classic” for the 12th time in the last 14 seasons. The Chargers dominated the second half after a back-and-forth contest in the first. Oxford now leads the all-time series with Lafayette, 27-26-2, the first lead in the series for Oxford since 1982. Oxford’s 63 points also marked a program record for most points scored in a single game.

“They had a great plan and hit us in the mouth and we had to respond. As the game went on, we made plays in all three phases,” OHS head coach Chris Cutcliffe told the Oxford Eagle. “… The challenge for us, and what we talk about in the preseason and in the non-region schedule is just improving each and every week regardless of outcomes or who the opponent is.”

Drew Dean is the unquestioned starter at quarterback, but Kiffin’s emergence as a runner Friday could prove valuable down the stretch as Oxford will fight to get back to the 7A state championship game. The Chargers’ program finally got it done in 2019 after losing in four different title games (2003, 2013, 2014, and 2015).

Ole Miss won’t be the only program chasing him, though.

Kiffin already holds scholarship offers from Arkansas State, East Carolina, SMU, Florida International, Georgia State, and Western Kentucky. He’s also receiving interest from Sacramento State and Murray State. But, being just a sophomore, this recruitment has a long ways to go.

He’s been on the camp circuit plenty of trains with quarterback guru Steve Clarkson when he’s back in California. As a freshman at Palos Verdes (Calif.), Kiffin played in just six games but still managed to throw for 750 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Kiffin will continue to receive interest from Group of 5 and Power 4 programs.
