Saturday’s 24-19 win over LSU was a gratifying one for Ole Miss and its fanbase. Last season, people expected the Rebels to be in the mix. After all, you had a first-round pick at quarterback and seven other draft picks scattered across an uber-talented roster.

Alas, Ole Miss lost to Kentucky and Florida and landed in the Gator Bowl instead of the 12-team playoff.

Fast forward to the 2025 season and Lane Kiffin’s program is 5-0 and 3-0 in the Southeastern Conference – firmly grasping the top spot in the standings as the calendar turns to October. It’s not just the wins and the statistics, though. There seems to be a legitimate mindset in the locker room this team is different.

Cayden Lee hinted at the different mindset after the win.

“Last year, people had all these expectations for us to go super, super far,” Lee said. “We didn’t end up doing that. This year, I feel almost no one is talking about us and I feel like all of the talk and stuff in the preseason really doesn’t matter. It just matters what the team’s mindset is and what you’re going to do each and every game. So far, we’ve just had a 1-0 mindset and that’s really worked out for us.”

So far through five games this season, if you’ve looked closely you can sense the confidence in this team. You could see it on the road against Kentucky, it was palpable in the back-and-forth thriller versus Arkansas, and on Saturday Kiffin’s team never once wavered and dominated LSU.

Now, you head into the bye week with a ton of momentum, a Top 5 ranking, and everything you want to accomplish in front of you.

Ole Miss once again hit the transfer portal hard in the off-season.

These things take time. Especially when you have a roster full of new faces at important positions. On Saturday, you could start to see some of it starting to pay off. Louisiana-Monroe safety Wydett Williams talked about why he came to Ole Miss and how the end result was expected.

“Just beating them, I’m just living the moment right now,” Williams said. “I’m excited to fix some mistakes and learn from it. …We dream for moments like this ever since we were little kids.

“We practice hard each and every day,” Williams said. “We go hard each and every day. A lot of teams don’t prepare like we prepare, so it’s not a shock to us.

“We wanted it more. Simple as that.”
