The truth about Lane Kiffin that Ole Miss and Florida fans need to hear amid coaching search rumors
All eyes are on Lane Kiffin as the Ole Miss head coach is the most coveted name during this winter’s coaching carousel.
All eyes are on Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin in the midst of what’s already shaping up to be the wildest coaching cycle ever.
The Florida Gators and the LSU Tigers, specifically, would love to swipe Kiffin from Ole Miss.
Kiffin, however, has the Rebels well-positioned to make a deep run in the College Football Playoff. With the early signing period set to begin in early December, plus the winter transfer portal window opening in early January, the timing to hire Kiffin will be tricky for Florida or LSU.
This unique scenario has led to Ole Miss fans calling for Kiffin to publicly deny interest in leaving Oxford, while Florida and LSU fans are hoping the Rebels’ season ends early so Kiffin will be “available” sooner.
Kiffin, meanwhile, is trying to keep his team focused on competing for a national championship while juggling recruiting and transfer evaluations amid non-stop outside noise about Florida and LSU.
The truth about Lane Kiffin that Ole Miss and Florida fans need to hear amid coaching search rumors
The unfortunate part of this whole situation is that it’s taking the focus away from an incredibly special season for the Rebels.
Ole Miss is a legitimate national championship contender. At the least, Kiffin and the Rebels essentially have a College Football Playoff spot locked up. That’s where the focus is for Kiffin right now.
That’s why it’s completely unfair for fans — especially Ole Miss fans — to demand that Kiffin reveal a public decision on his future before the season is even over.
Here’s the truth about Kiffin — he deserves the opportunity to consider what’s best for his future. And he should be allowed to hold off on that decision until after the Rebels’ season is over. His only focus right now, when it comes to college football, should be on the 2025 Ole Miss team.
Even if he’s 99 percent sure he will stay at Ole Miss, Kiffin, like any adult who gets a job offer, deserves the chance to reflect on his current situation and make a sound decision about his future. If Florida or LSU doesn’t want to wait, then that’s their prerogative. Kiffin doesn’t owe those programs an answer in November. That’s absurd.
On the flip side, Ole Miss should allow Kiffin the space to make a decision. I think the majority of Rebels fans are hoping Kiffin will stay in Oxford. But they should only want that if Kiffin is 100 percent committed to that decision. Forcing Kiffin to make a decision before he’s ready to make a decision isn’t the best way for Ole Miss to handle this.
Give the guy some space, let him continue to coach Ole Miss, which should be the absolute top focus right now for anyone in Oxford, and then let Kiffin make the decision that’s best for him and his family. That’s what will lead to the best version of Lane Kiffin, wherever he coaches next season.
I don’t know how this will play out. I don’t think Kiffin even knows right now how it will play out. However, what I know is that everyone close would be best served by living in the moment, enjoying the final stretch of the 2025 season, and then letting the Kiffin saga unfold as it may.
