As many Oregon Ducks fans know, the Denver Broncos have a dynamic duo at quarterback and wide receiver who connected for nearly 1400 yards and 14 touchdowns back in 2023.
However, despite that historic Oregon program connection, Bo Nix and Troy Franklin seldom found each other last year as rookies as Franklin struggled to develop into a solid pro wide receiver in year one. Could that change as the duo dives into their sophomore NFL seasons? Based on what Bo Nix had to say this week at Broncos training camp, it's possible.
Bo Nix makes strong statement on Troy Franklin's development at WR for Broncos
Once Bo Nix transferred from Auburn over to Oregon ahead of the 2023 season, Troy Franklin exploded for the Ducks. He led Oregon in receptions, yards, and touchdowns in 2022, then became one of the most productive wide receivers in all of college football the year after.
He shockingly struggled to break through as a rookie in 2024 with the Broncos, working his way up to their WR4 role, but Franklin has apparently looked far better heading into year two. So much so, Bo Nix couldn't help but talk him up this week at Broncos training camp, saying:
"[Troy Franklin] is playing faster this year. His 'natural gift' is getting open…I'm getting more, 'Hey, I'm open, throw me the ball,' from him…That's usually a good thing from guys who don't usually do that…The transition from 16 to 11 is good for him. He looks better."
Franklin only managed just over 400 offensive snaps last year, catching 30 receptions for around 300 yards, but if summer OTAs and this year's training camp are any indication that's likely about to change.
Franklin has been absolutely cooking defensive backs since OTAs earlier this summer, and it doesn't seem like that momentum is slowing down any time soon for him. Here's just one of the many impressive plays he made from earlier this year:
Franklin still has to prove he's better than either Marvin Mims or Devaughn Vele if he wants to truly earn a near-every-down role in 2025, but based on everything we're hearing out of Broncos camp, and from his own quarterback, he certainly sounds close to a breakout season.
Marvin Mims, the former second round pick, has two decent seasons under his belt already and is still just 23 years old. Devaughn Vele, on the other hand, is already going to be 28 years old before this season is over and doesn't exactly look like "the future" for Denver. Expect to see Franklin start ahead of Vele (and early) if he is indeed set to break out in 2025.
