It's better late than never, and the Oregon Ducks have started the process of courting one of the elite southern prospects in the 2027 recruiting class. Dan Lanning and his Ducks have their work cut out for them in chasing someone in LSU's backyard, but it's worth the effort when a foundational piece is on the line.

Easton Royal, a five-star wide receiver from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, has solidified his status as one of the nation’s elite prospects after an impressive sophomore season.

Now, Oregon has joined a lengthy list of big-time programs to throw their hand in the mix.

Ranked as Louisiana’s top wide receiver, Royal has continued to shine on the camp circuit this summer, drawing intense interest from college programs eager to secure his talents. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound standout has received scholarship offers from programs including LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, Texas, Michigan, Florida State, and Tennessee, among others.

In the 2027 recruiting cycle, Royal is rated as the No. 2 wide receiver nationally and a top-15 overall prospect.

In 2024, during his sophomore year, Royal earned Catholic League All-District First-Team honors, amassing over 1,100 all-purpose yards and scoring double-digit touchdowns for the Brother Martin Crusaders.

He recently ran a 4.29 40-yard dash, winning the Future 50 competition. The track star ran sophomore 100-meter times of 10.38 and 10.68, per Athletic.net. The 10.38 rep reportedly set a Brother Martin school record.

LSU has a strong history of retaining Louisiana’s top talent, with recent in-state stars like Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas, and TaRon Francis choosing to stay home. However, according to Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman, the Florida Gators have also emerged as an early frontrunner in Royal’s recruitment.

With two full seasons to go, Lanning and company must prioritize selling Oregon as a home away from home, and his best bet to make the NFL. That's tough to do with LSU's track record, but their own run of high-end receiver additions bodes well for their long-shot odds.
