The Oregon Ducks were in the spotlight at the NFL Honors on February 6th. One of its alumni, an impactful player that makes even more of an impact on his community, was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year.
Former Duck Arik Armstead was announced as the recipient of the prestigious award which recognizes an NFL player for their community service and on-field excellence. Often regarded as one of the highest honors in the NFL, its a testament to character and commitment to helping others that Armstead embodies.
"Receiving the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award is an incredible honor—one that goes beyond football. This award represents the power of service, the responsibility to uplift others, and the impact we can create through education,” Armstead said. “Through the Armstead Academic Project, my mission has always been to provide students with the resources they need to succeed. This recognition is a testament to that work, but there’s still so much more to do. I’m committed to using my platform to create real change—because the work doesn’t stop here."
Commissioner Roger Goodell had high remarks for Armstead in recognition of him being the recipient of the award.
“Arik’s leadership, dedication to his team, and commitment to his community truly embody Walter Payton’s enduring legacy of excellence on the field and compassion off it,” Goodell said. “Since joining the league 10 years ago, Arik has made it his mission to empower youth by providing them with the resources and support they need to thrive. We are extremely proud to name Arik Armstead as our 2024 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year."
The longtime 49er was a free agent this last offseason, joining the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team loaded with young talent on the defensive line. Upon arriving, Armstead's leadership was felt in the locker room.
Oregon Ducks legend Joey Harrington took to social media not only to congratulate Armstead, but also to emphasize how proud he is to be a Duck.
Character matters. Football is a game that all of us who love the game get very wrapped up in, but what happens off the field is much more impactful than what happens on it. Harrington pointed out what makes Armstead and other leaders in the sport so special — that they use their platform to lift others up and to do good in the communities that they live.
Armstead represents Oregon well. Kudos, Arik,
