For Oregon Ducks fans, it might feel like a week later than it should have, but the Ducks are officially the No. 1 team in the country in the AP Poll. For the first time since 2012, the Ducks are the best team in college football.
Two weeks ago, Oregon knocked off the then-No. 2 Ohio State in what was the biggest home game in Ducks history. It generated a record crowd, and is already having ripple effects on the recruiting trail.
This comes on the back of the Ducks traveling to Indiana to beat Purdue 35-0, pitching their first shutout on the road since 1992. Late on Saturday night, the Georgia Bulldogs knocked off the Texas Longhorns, who entered the week as the top team. That loss bumped Texas down to fifth, and opened the door the Ducks to climb to No. 1.
Oregon looks like they can win in a variety of ways. Running back Jordan James is capable of being a workhorse running back against the best competition as evidenced against Ohio State. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel is the Heisman frontrunner and has the highest completion percentage in the country at 77.0%.
Making them even more deadly, wide receiver Evan Stewart is emerging into one of the premier downfield threats in college football. Over the last two games, Evans has caught 11 of 12 targets for 245 yards and a touchdown.
The Oregon Ducks will continue their quest for the College Football Playoffs with a home game against No. 20 Illinois next Saturday at 3:30 PM ET.
