Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have been hot on the trail for 2025 quarterback recruit Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele for some time. Apparently their interest in him was for good measure. The quarterback continues to skyrocket up recruiting rankings.
On3 released their updated rankings earlier this week, with Sagapolutele climbing from their 291st ranked recruit all the way to No. 19, becoming a newly-minted 5-star and a top quarterback in the country.
While Sagapolutele is still committed to the Cal Bears, Oregon and Georgia are trying to steal him away late. For Oregon, there's an interesting angle that they have going for them — the continuing legacy of Hawaiian quarterbacks.
Marcus Mariota is the only Heisman Trophy winner in Oregon history. This year, the nation is seeing another former Hawaiian quarterback take over at Oregon in Dillon Gabriel, donning Mariota's No. 8 jersey, and putting himself firmly in the Heisman conversation with the Ducks cruising as the No. 1 team in the country.
Sagapolutele, living in Ewa Beach, Oahu, would have an opportunity to continue that storyline at Oregon.
“For me, it’s a great fit," Sagapolutele said in an interview with SI. "It’s a great place over there. Coach (Dan) Lanning and coach (Will) Stein are doing something great."
Sagapolutele also mentioned that he's "feeling the love" from other 2025 Oregon commits, and indicated that it's a three horse race between Cal, Oregon, and Georgia. Although he is currently committed, it seems like his recruitment is truly an open race at this point.
He even went so far as to say that he has a current leader in mind, and that his mindset is "unlikely" to change.
Oregon is planning for life after Gabriel. Dante Moore, a former 5-star recruit who will be entering his third season at the college level next year, will get a crack at it, but Sagapolutele sitting back and waiting his turn would be a wonderful succession plan over the next couple years. Expect Oregon to make a strong final push to land the exciting Hawaiian signal-caller.
