Oregon had their recruiting class in the bag on National Signing Day, but then the unforeseeable happened. Dallas Wilson, a five-star wide receiver that has long been committed to the Ducks, asked to be released from his financial affidavit from Oregon, which they granted.

In doing so, Wilson signed with the Florida Gators. It's fair for Ducks fans to be bummed about missing out on signing the top wide receiver duo in the nation, with Wilson ranking just behind Dakorien Moore as the top wide receiver recruit in the country. Wilson, though, had his reasons.

Wilson is a Florida native. After rumors on National Signing Day of Wilson flipping his commitment began to swirl shortly before he signed with Oregon, it was clear that the Gators made a late push to land the top home state recruit.

Something that drew him to Florida was the future prospects of playing with quarterback DJ Lagway, who showed tremendous upside this season as a true freshman.

“Lagway picked the team up, put them on his back, drove down the field,” Wilson said. “He definitely was a team player. Just loved the way he performed,” Lagway told On3.

Until we hear more, we'll never know exactly what swayed Wilson, but staying in his home state with an electric quarterback played a big role in it. On his last visit to Florida, Wilson mentioned that he had a long conversation with head coach Billy Napier, who made it clear to Wilson how he would fit in their offense and how much they need him.

It's a huge win for Florida to keep Wilson home and away from Oregon, who has been a recruiting juggernaut. For Ducks fans, who have known Wilson's name for a long time with him committing to Oregon in January of 2023, nothing other than the utmost respect should be given to Wilson for making the choice that he feels is in his best interest.

The Ducks now find themselves a top receiver short, though, which could put added emphasis on their plans in the transfer portal with all three of their starting wide receivers from this year departing from the program whenever this College Football Playoffs run comes to a close.
