The Oregon Ducks have had a couple of great lead running backs in recent years, with Bucky Irving turning into a rookie gem for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024, and Jordan James leading the charge last season at Oregon in his place.

This year, the Ducks have turned to the transfer portal, bringing in the top running back available in Makhi Hughes. With spring practices ongoing, Hughes is clearly already making quite an impression.

According to Scoop Ducks' Max Torres, returning running back Noah Whittington, who will look to be a valuable complementary asset out of the backfield this year was raving about what Hughes is going to bring to Oregon.

"I think he brings a sense of violence," Whittington said. "Especially him in the Memphis drill. Him pass protecting, he doesn't take contact, he enforces it. And the same thing within his running style. He's a big boy. He's fast. I don't think anybody's really gonna want to tackle him."

Hughes, the Tulane transfer, is coming off a monster season. I'm not sure the rest of the college football world knows just how good he is. The 5-foot-11 210 lbs running back has run for 2,779 yards and 22 touchdowns over the last two seasons. As Whittington said, he's fast, powerful, and built.

He will walk in as the clear lead back this season, with an opportunity to introduce himself on the national stage with Oregon in the Big Ten. Hopefully he picks up the torch and runs with it, continuing the tradition of Oregon having an elite ground game.
