We are just over two weeks away from the Oregon Ducks opening the 2025 campaign by hosting Montana State to start the college football season.

There are plenty of reasons for optimism in the Ducks’ second season in the Big Ten. However, things aren’t all positive for Dan Lanning’s team right now.

Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game, and Oregon has already been bitten by the injury bug. One of the Ducks’ highly coveted freshmen is set to miss significant time.

Oregon loses former five-star recruit Trey McNutt to a serious injury

The Ducks will be without McNutt, a former five-star recruit Oregon landed over Ohio State from Shaker Heights (OH). According to Pete Nakos of On3, McNutt broke his right leg during fall camp. There is currently no timetable for the talented freshman’s return.

McNutt was ranked as the No. 2 safety and No. 31 overall player in the class of 2025, per the 247Sports Composite. The 6-foot, 195-pound safety was expected to contribute right away as a true freshman. He flashed his ability in the spring game with a pass breakup and was expected to play a role in the Ducks’ defense this season.

Oregon’s addition of star Purdue transfer Dillon Thieneman now looks even more important. The future early-round draft pick is expected to be the centerpiece of the Ducks’ defense.

Landing McNutt was an impressive recruiting win for Lanning’s staff, as Ohio State, Texas A&M, and USC were all heavily in the mix for the standout safety.

No. 7 Oregon will open the season against Montana State at 4 p.m. ET—without one of their most prized freshmen.
