The Oregon Ducks lose former fan favorite to the transfer portal but the team’s depth at the position gives little cause for concern
Former starting corner Jahlil Florence has entered the transfer portal.
The Oregon Ducks’ cornerback room is undergoing a significant transition as redshirt junior Jahlil Florence has officially entered the transfer portal midway through the 2025 season. Florence, who was once a key starter for Oregon’s defense, departs a program that has seen a surge of young talent at his position.
Moving on
Florence confirmed his decision on social media Sunday night, writing, “Good luck the rest of season to my brothers.”According to On3, Florence intends to transfer after the season.
The former four-star recruit started nine of 11 games in 2023, recording 27 tackles (two for loss), one sack, one interception, and one pass breakup before suffering a torn right meniscus that sidelined him for much of the following year. After returning to full participation in spring practice and making plays during fall camp, Florence appeared in only two games this season and did not record any statistics. He was absent from Oregon’s travel roster for recent games against Penn State and Rutgers and did not participate in warmups versus Wisconsin.
When asked earlier this season whether Florence might be redshirting, head coach Dan Lanning appeared uncertain, initially saying he believed Florence had already played in four games before adding, “maybe.”
Duck’s DB room is full of young talent
Florence’s reduced role coincides with the rapid emergence of several young corners who have stepped up in Oregon’s deep secondary. True freshman Brandon Finney Jr. has been a revelation, showcasing elite instincts and physicality well beyond his years. Finney’s steady coverage and ball skills have helped solidify the Ducks’ pass defense, earning him increased snaps and praise from the coaching staff.
Additionally, fellow underclassmen Ify Obidegwu and Na’Eem Offord have impressed in rotational roles, flashing the length, speed, and technique that fit perfectly in Oregon’s aggressive defensive scheme. Their strong play has given defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi and the Ducks confidence in the next generation of corners, even as experienced players like Florence move on.
Florence’s exit follows the graduation of Theran Johnson, leaving Oregon with a core of six returning cornerbacks projected for 2026 and a commitment from Davon Benjamin. While Florence’s departure marks the end of an era for one of the Ducks’ most experienced defensive backs, it also highlights how well the program continues to recruit and develop elite defensive talent.
As the Ducks push forward in the second half of the season, Oregon’s young corners have turned what could have been a depth concern into one of the team’s most promising position groups — signaling a bright future in Eugene’s secondary even as one of its former leaders moves on.
