Oregon’s secondary got a significant boost this offseason with the arrival of one of the Big Ten’s top defensive backs.

Theran Johnson, who earned second-team All-Big Ten honors at Northwestern in 2024, transferred to the Ducks after recording 53 tackles, 10 pass breakups, and two interceptions last year. The veteran corner is competing for a starting job in Eugene and will see his old teammates when Oregon travels to Northwestern on September 13th.

“I wish him the best over there at Oregon and I look forward to playing against him,” said Wildcats running back Joseph Himon II at Big Ten media days. “He was a great guy, a great teammate.”

Northwestern defensive lineman Anto Saka said there are “no hard feelings” about Johnson’s decision to move on, while head coach David Braun praised the transfer’s skill set.

“Theran is a talented football player with a bright future,” Braun said. “He’s got quick feet and plays well in man-to-man coverage.”

With his experience and proven ability, Johnson could be a key piece of Oregon’s defense as the Ducks look to replace starting corners Jabbar Muhammad and Nikko Reeed, who entered the NFL Draft.

Taking a closer look at Johnson’s skillset should excite Duck fans about his potential as a lockdown corner.

Johnson has excellent length for the position and displays excellent overall athleticism. He is smooth and sudden in his back pedal and can click and close when working back towards the football on breaking and comeback routes. He is outstanding in press-man coverage as he shows a very good ability to be physical at the line of scrimmage and redirect the receiver’s route early on in the play. Additionally, Johnson can stay in phase running stride for stride down the field with the receiver.

One of Johnson’s best attributes is his ability to play football in the air. He flashes outstanding ball skills and hands and can convert pass deflections to interceptions—a skill that separates the good from the great.

Johnson will be the veteran leader in the Ducks’ cornerback room and will be relied upon as the Ducks’ number one corner. With his experience and talented skill set, Johnson should be up for the challenge.
