Future NFL Hall of Famer floats an idea for Penn State’s head coach issue that no one is really talking about, and it’s brilliant
The Nittany Lions would be better off that way than they are right now.
The Penn State Nittany Lions went from being one of the most highly regarded football programs in the country to being in one of the worst situations possible in a matter of months. Firing head coach James Franklin started the downward spiral, and the inability to find a replacement has continued it.
They cannot get someone to consider becoming their head coach. It looks as bad as it is. Hiring pretty much anyone would be better than what they’re doing right now. They have no head coach, it’s National Signing Day, and they have the very last class in FBS football.
Luckily for them, future NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has the perfect idea for Penn State.
“Go be Penn State’s head coach,” Roethlisberger said of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. “You know what he would do at Penn State? He’d probably go on to win national championships. Because he’s a great recruiter.”
I’m not sure about the championships part, but he would be a great recruiter. He’s an NFL head coach, and one of the best ever. He’s the model of consistency, and he’s a player’s coach. That’s appealing to high school kids looking for the best route to get to the NFL.
‘Never say never’ when it comes to Tomlin to Penn State
“It’s a fun theory to think about Tomlin moving to Happy Valley and taking on the title as head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, but as Tomlin once said when asked about the USC opening a few years back: “Never say never, but…Never. There’s not a booster with a big enough blank check.” I would bet that the viral sentiment he had then still rings true today. Why?
“Because even though the Steelers and Tomlin are teetering on collapse, he’s an NFL coach through and through. He enjoys developing young men and players more than perhaps any other coach in the league, but he loves what he calls the “weighty moments” of NFL football: the competition, the stakes, the pedigree. Mike Tomlin is a professional coach, and I would be floored if he left for college ball, a sport where you are opening Pandora’s box every season.” – Rob Gregson, A to Z Sports Pittsburgh.
